Golf has been enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds for many years, and is a game you can play throughout your whole life. However, if you're new to the sport, we understand there can be a lot to learn. From how beginner golf lessons can be beneficial to understanding what club to use, we’ve put together this blog to answer some of the most frequently asked questions by golf beginners about the game and playing at Little Hay.

What equipment do I need to start playing golf?
A few basic pieces of equipment, including golf clubs, golf balls, and tees are essential. You’ll also need a golf bag to carry your clubs, golf shoes, and comfortable clothing that allows for a full range of motion. While you don't need to invest in expensive equipment right away, it's essential to have kit that fits your size and skill level.
How do I learn to play golf?
The best way to learn is by taking beginner golf lessons from a qualified instructor. Golf lessons will teach you the fundamentals of the game, including the proper swing, stance, and grip. Lessons will also cover etiquette, rules, and strategies for playing on the course. Additionally, you can practise at the driving range to improve your skills.
Do I need to have any prior experience before taking beginner golf lessons?
No. Our golf professionals are experienced in working with beginners and will help you learn the basics of the game.
How do I know what club to use?
There are several different types of golf clubs, including woods, irons, wedges, and putters. Woods are used for long shots off the tee, while irons are used for shorter shots from the fairway or rough. Wedges are used for shots around the green, and putters are used to roll the ball into the hole. Learning how to use each club properly is essential to improving your game, and a qualified golf instructor can teach you the proper techniques.
What is par, and how does it affect my game?
Par is the standard number of strokes that a skilled golfer is expected to take to complete a hole or course. Par varies depending on the length and difficulty of the hole or course. When playing golf, your goal is to complete each hole in as few strokes as possible. Knowing the par for each hole can help you plan your shots and set realistic goals for your game.
What is a golf handicap?
A handicap is a system used to level the playing field for golfers of different skill levels. Your handicap is a numerical value that represents your skill level relative to the par for a course. The lower your handicap, the better your skill level. When you play against other golfers, your handicap is used to adjust the scores and make the game fair. You don’t need to have a handicap to play at Little Hay, although the service is available for members.
What is basic golf etiquette?
Proper golf etiquette includes respecting other players, being quiet when others are taking their swing, repairing divots and ball marks, and keeping pace with the group ahead of you. It's important to follow the rules of the course and be mindful of other players around you.
